Why ATmega

Why we started ATmega, what we actually believe about AI, and what kind of company we're trying to build.

The Honest Version

Most companies write a founding story that sounds like a TED talk. Ours is simpler, and a little more uncomfortable.

We kept watching AI get hyped into oblivion. Every week a new game-changing tool, every month a new promise that software development was about to become fully automated. Founders were being sold AI implementations that didn't work in production. Engineers were being blamed for things no engineer could fix - because the problem wasn't code, it was expectations.

We started ATmega because we believed good AI engineering was rare, honest AI communication was even rarer, and that combination was exactly what growing businesses actually needed.

What ATmega Actually Does

We build intelligent digital products for startups and growing businesses. That means different things for different clients, but it always starts with the same question: does AI actually help here, or are we adding complexity for no reason?

When AI does belong, we build it properly:

  • GenAI & LLM integrations - fine-tuned models, prompt pipelines, and production-ready deployments
  • RAG systems - retrieval-augmented generation so your AI talks about your data, not just the internet
  • Document intelligence - extract, classify, and act on unstructured information at scale
  • AI chatbots & support assistants - real, helpful bots that don't embarrass your product
  • Custom ML pipelines - when off-the-shelf models aren't close enough

When AI doesn't belong, we build great software anyway:

  • Mobile apps in Flutter for iOS and Android
  • Web apps and SaaS platforms with React and Next.js
  • Admin dashboards, booking systems, e-commerce
  • Cloud infrastructure, DevOps, payments, auth

Our Take on AI

We've watched the AI hype cycle closely enough to have opinions.

What gets soldWhat we actually do
"AI will automate everything"We assess where automation genuinely pays off
Chatbots that hallucinate product detailsRAG-backed assistants trained on your real data
Fine-tuning when prompting was enoughRight-size the solution to the actual problem
Black-box model integrationsExplainable systems your team can maintain
Overpromised timelinesScoped MVPs with honest delivery estimates

The pattern we see most often: a company gets sold an AI tool, it fails in production, and six months later they're looking for someone to fix it. We'd rather be the first call, not the rescue call.

The Stack We Trust

We're not stack-agnostic for its own sake. We have real opinions about what works in production.

AI / ML

  • Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch
  • LangChain, LlamaIndex for RAG pipelines
  • OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini APIs - we work across providers

Frontend & Mobile

  • React, Next.js for web
  • Flutter for cross-platform mobile

Backend & Infrastructure

  • Node.js, FastAPI
  • PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Firebase
  • AWS, GCP - wherever your workload fits best

We pick boring, proven tools for the parts of the system where boring and proven is the right call. We only reach for new technology when it genuinely earns its place.

Who We Build For

We work best with startups and growing businesses that:

  • Have a real product problem, not just a "we need AI" mandate from the board
  • Can commit a founding team member or technical lead to stay involved in scope decisions
  • Want a long-term partner who'll tell them when an idea is bad, not just nod and charge hours
  • Are comfortable with an iterative approach - ship something real, learn, improve

We're probably not the right fit if you need a large staff augmentation engagement, or if the brief is "build whatever, just make it look like AI."

What We're Building Toward

ATmega is small by design right now. We believe deeply that staying close to the work - actually writing the code, actually talking to users - is how you build a reputation worth having.

The goal isn't to grow into a faceless consulting agency. The goal is to become the team that people call when the AI problem is real and the stakes are high. We want to be known for shipping things that work, explaining why they work, and being honest about what comes next.

Come Build With Us

If you're working on something interesting - an AI feature that needs to actually function in production, a mobile product for a real market, a data problem worth solving - we'd like to hear about it.
